Families will receive advanced 1st payments starting July 15, 2021, the rest can be claimed on the 2021 tax return.

To qualify for advance Child Tax Credit payments

Filed a 2019 or 2020 tax return. On that return you must claim the Child Tax Credit.

If you did not file a return there is still a way to receive the payments.

Have lived in the United States the majority of the year or file a joint return with a spouse who lived in the United States the majority of the year

A child who qualifies that is younger than the age of 18 as of December 2021, this child must have a valid Social Security number

Even Though you  may have qualified for the credit in 2020, you may not qualify in 2021. The credit has certain income levels that begin to phase out for married and filing a joint return or if filing as a qualifying widow or widower at 150,000; head of household at 112,500; single filer or are married and filing a separate return at $75,000.
